For millennia, sperm whales have peacefully traversed the oceans before their fateful encounter with humanity. We, arguably the most dangerous species on the planet, have brought them to the brink of extinction. These tranquil and majestic animals have been hunted in the Azores for more than a century. Now, a sudden and exceptionally rapid transformation has occurred: sperm whales have transformed from sacrificial victims into the rising star of eco-tourism. With 77 color images and illustrations, this book traces the history of the Giants of the Sea and the men who hunted them and - in some cases - still hunt them today. Historical accounts are interwoven with personal anecdotes directly gathered by the author in his encounters with whales and whalers - both of yesterday and today.

Andrea Izzotti is a freelance writer and photographer. As a hunter of emotions, he is passionate about travel, nature, and the outdoors. In pursuit of these passions, he has visited some of the most remote and extraordinary places on the planet. His photographs have been published in various books, magazines, and exhibitions in Italy and abroad. Andrea has written several photographic journey books covering a variety of enigmatic wildlife and stunning landscapes. He is the proud recipient of the 2011 National Geographic Italy Award and the winner of the Asferico Photocontest 2019. In 2021, he was awarded the Muse Awards Photographer of the Year in the United States.
